What Is An Exhaust Gasket and How Do I Replace It

Understanding what each item does, and what happens when they fail, is a critical responsibility that every mechanic or automotive industry worker must take on. Exhaust gaskets should be very high on your agenda because it is one of the most likely gaskets to experience problems. 

 

What is an exhaust gasket?

An exhaust gasket is a mechanical seal, usually made of multiple layers of embossed steel. However, it can also be made from high temperature fiber materials, graphite, ceramic composites, and combinations of these materials.
It is a key component of an automotive engine and is used as a resilient part to seal the intersection between two surfaces, in this case the cylinder head and the manifold unit. In many automotive engine systems, only one exhaust manifold gasket is required. However, some engines, such as the V6 or V8 will require two.

What does the exhaust gasket do?

As mentioned earlier, the gasket attaches the manifold to the cylinder head. In turn, this allows the manifold itself to collect exhaust gases and redirect them to the exhaust while drawing new air into the vacuum created by the exhaust gases.
In many ways, this can be compared to a person's lungs and respiratory system. The manifold and cylinder head "inhale" gas as they draw out used gas and draw in new air. Over time, exhaust manifold gaskets promote better performance by covering seals and stopping leaks, which can also lead to temperature spikes.
Exhaust manifold gaskets help ensure a smoother ride and more power. It is an especially valuable component when the engine needs to work hard. In addition to its immediate function, it is important to remember that the exhaust manifold gasket is partially responsible for protecting the catalytic converter.

 


How to replace exhaust gaskets

As a worker in the automotive industry, there are several situations that may require you to repair a gasket. A mechanic may be required to complete this work during annual service on behalf of a customer. Likewise, consumers may have noticed the above symptoms and need you to diagnose and fix the problem. 


Remove the faulty gasket

Remove the battery, making sure to first disconnect the positive and negative cables from any electronic components. 
Use a ratchet to remove the engine cover bolts.
Gain access to the exhaust manifold gasket by safely removing and disconnecting any items obstructing the path. This step will vary by manufacturer or vehicle.
Unscrew the bolts on the top or side of the manifold until the heat shield can be safely removed.
Lubricate the nuts and bolts of the faulty exhaust manifold, including the bolts that attach to the exhaust pipe.
Using a socket and ratchet, carefully remove the bolts that connect the exhaust manifold to the cylinder head. Then remove the manifold from the exhaust pipe.
With the manifold removed, you should be able to simply slide the exhaust gasket out of place.

After this, you will need to clean the area before installing the new parts.

 

Adding the new gasket

Attach the manifold gasket to the cylinder head studs and apply anti-seize to the studs.
Add the new gasket, attach the seal to the exhaust manifold and the bottom of the exhaust pipe, and then attach the two parts that have been treated with anti-seize.
Attach the exhaust manifold to the cylinder head studs.
Tighten the cylinder head studs in the order recommended in the vehicle manual until the manifold sits at the flash on the cylinder. 
Tighten the exhaust manifold nuts until the necessary pressure level is reached.
Reinstall the heat shield, hood, coolant lines, and air filter. Refill radiator.
Reconnect the battery.
After this process, you will need to test the engine. Listen for noises and note the smell of insufficient power and/or combustion.
