Automobiles Exhaust Systems: Component Parts

Mar. 10, 2022

The automotive exhaust system is one of the most important parts of any vehicle on the road today. The combustion of gasoline produces a number of dangerous (and potentially deadly) gases: carbon monoxide, nitrous oxide and nitrous oxide. To keep drivers out of danger, vehicles rely on exhaust systems to eliminate these harmful gases.
The names of the major automotive exhaust system parts for most exhaust systems include:

Oxygen sensors

Oxygen sensors can be found on both sides of the catalytic converter. They are used to measure the amount of oxygen in the exhaust system. Once the oxygen sensor is measured, it will increase or decrease the amount of fuel used in the combustion process. By doing so, it achieves an optimal mixture of fuel and air.

Exhaust Manifold

Exhaust manifolds are located on the engine of a vehicle. Their purpose is to collect any exhaust gases from the engine cylinders. Next, they direct these gases through the rest of the exhaust system. Exhaust manifolds are vital to ensure that no toxic gases can reach the occupants of the vehicle.

Catalytic converters

The catalytic converter is located between the exhaust manifold and the silencer. A catalytic converter works in the background of your exhaust system and does not make any sound. Its purpose is to eliminate any toxic gases (such as nitrogen, unburned hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide) or unburned fuel from the exhaust gas. It also prevents them from being sent into the environment.

Diesel Particulate Filter

A DPF is used to remove any soot or particulate matter from the exhaust of a diesel engine. DPFs are required on all diesel vehicles to meet modern emissions requirements.

Exhaust pipes

Each of the components listed above has one thing in common. They are all connected together by an exhaust pipe.
What is the purpose of the exhaust pipe? It is to direct all the gases through the various parts of the car's exhaust system. It is then eventually guided to exit through the final exhaust pipe.

Mufflers

A muffler is also widely known as a silencer. It is located near the end of the exhaust system. The silencer serves to reduce any noise caused by the fuel combustion process. It also directs the smoke outside the exhaust system. This can be done by using perforated tubes. These tubes produce different sound waves which cancel each other out.

It is very important to take care of your exhaust system. Often, exhaust systems can rust and/or break; this is extremely dangerous for both the driver and the vehicle itself. Remember, the exhaust system is responsible for carrying deadly gases away from the vehicle and keeping it running efficiently, so it is very important that the driver pays attention and keeps it serviced.
